Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
A mysterious girl, who bears an awful mark upon her back. Is she as innocent as she is beautiful, or does her lovely face hide an evil to horrible to imagine?
What happens?
Thaniel Fox is a Wych-hunter, his father was perhaps the greatest, a hard act for Thaniel to have to follow. One night whilst out trying to catch a Cradlejack Thaniel finds a young girl, wild and seemingly mad. He takes her home to protect her from the wych-kin that stalk the old streets of London. This is no London that we would recognise but a place that has been partially destroyed by bombing and war and has now become home to wolves and night creatures like vampires that seek human blood to keep them alive. There is also the terrible Stitch-Face an unknown monster who kills lone women and mutilates their bodies for some evil purpose. In the safety of his home surrounded by charms and incantations, Thaniel and his mentor Cathaline try to discover what has happened to the strange girl he has found. Her name is Alaizabel Cray and she is not only hunted by creatures outside the house, something inside her also wants to get out. !
Is it easy to read?
An easy read fro someone with good ability, there are some very scary parts in this book and I wouldn't recommend it to the easily scared!
Anything else?
I couldn't put this book down, I was riveted! It is eerily captivating. The room seemed to darken as I read and I kept expecting to hear footsteps behind me. Absolutely brilliant. It reminded me a little of Robin Jarvis' The Wyrd Museum or The Witches of Whitby, but is not a copy or even close to them in story. The story had so many different elements all slowly being drawn together to one final explosion. You couldn't guess the whole ending and one final twist will even have you cheering! Captivating

Who says so?

The publisher reckons...
Thaniel, just seventeen, is a wych-hunter. Together, he and Cathaline - his freind and mentor - track down the fearful creatures that lurk in the Old Quater of London. It is on one of these hunts that he first encounters Alaizabel Cray. Alaizabel is half-crazed, lovely, and possessed. Whatever dreadful entity has entered Alaizabel's soul has turned her into a strange and unearthly magnet - attracting evil and drawing horrors from the very depths of hell. Cathaline and Thaniel must discover its cause, and thus begins a treacherous quest across London. At stake is all humanity. Chris Wooding has created a host of dramatic and memorable characters in this extraordinary, cinematic novel. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
