| A ghost story about a woman who disappears from her painting. | | Floss, Sam and their foster brother Magnus, arrive at Bisham Abbey to spend the summer with a cousin. It is an old, creepy sort of house, that has been used as a conference centre and leisure facility, but neither of these schemes worked out. Magnus quickly senses the presence of a very sad woman and on the first night even Floss and Sam hear someone sobbing and feel the room go suddenly cold. What is the terrible secret of Lady Alice Neale? And will Magnus be able to put his own terrible past behind him in order to lay the sobbing ghost to rest? | | Large clear text make this quite an easy book to read. Boys and girls will find this a good choice for a bit of a scare. | | This is a well written ghost story, just enough for the young reader, or someone like me who doesn't want to be awake all night! Pilling has taken some parts of true ghost stories and put them together to make a convincing tale. I liked it because there are still some loose threads at the end. Not everything is made okay and she doesn't explain every little detail. There is food for thought if you like! I also liked it because it didn't scare the hell out of me! | | | This review by Mrs Mad. | | Sam, Floss, and their foster brother, Magnus, spend their holidays with cousin M at The Abbey. On their first night, Magnus hears a woman crying and when he goes to investigate he discovers that the 16th-century portrait of Lady Alice Neale, hung in the Great Hall, is now just an empty frame. | Tell Mrs Mad what you think about this book! |
