When Silas rescues an injured mermaid, he begins an adventure full of heroes, villains and stinking sewers full of rats and other nasty things.
Silas collects rags and bones to earn a living and look after his sick grandfather. Tormented by the wicked bullies, Jasper Dredge and his son Albert, Silas leads a harsh life in which there is little comfort or happiness. One day he finds a mermaid half dead on the beach and offers to help her recover. Back at his grandfather's rag and bone yard, Silas listens to the wonderful stories Ooli tells whilst she recovers. But danger lurks nearby, and when Ooli is kidnapped Silas puts his own life in danger to save his new friend.
I'd suggest this to any reader who likes to try something a bit different.
I really love this story. It is rich in description and detail and the action leaps from the pages. The baddies are really nasty and the heroes don't always win. Highly recommended.
